The CBP One app, which allowed asylum seekers and migrants to schedule appointments with border officials, has been shut down by President Donald Trump. The move fulfills one of his “Day 1” promises to roll back key immigration policies implemented by former President Joe Biden and implement his hardline agenda.

On Monday, shortly after Trump was sworn in, a notice appeared on the Customs and Border Protection website informing users that the app previously used to schedule appointments at eight southwest border ports of entry was no longer available. The notice also stated that all existing appointments had been canceled.

Newsweek has contacted the White House and CBP for further comment via email.

Why It Matters

The decision aligns with a promise Trump made during his campaign and is likely to satisfy critics who argued that it served as an overly generous incentive for more people to approach Mexico’s border with the United States.

What To Know

Migrants who wished to enter the U.S. legally were required to access the CBP One app to request an appointment at a land port of entry to the country.

The CBP One app was the only avenue, bar a few rare exceptions, to request asylum on the U.S.-Mexico border. To access the app’s core functions, users must confirm that they are in northern or central Mexico.

Meanwhile, footage has emerged on social media of migrants in tears after learning of the news the app had been shut down.

The CBP One app has been highly popular, functioning as an online lottery system that grants appointments to 1,450 people daily at eight border crossings. These individuals enter the U.S. under immigration “parole,” a presidential authority that Joe Biden has exercised more frequently than any other president since its creation in 1952.

The CBP One app, utilized by the Biden administration, enabled hundreds of thousands of migrants to enter the country to pursue asylum claims.

White House officials under Trump have consistently stated their intent to eliminate it immediately.

Trump plans to sign an executive order to terminate parole programs for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans.

These two programs have allowed nearly 1.5 million individuals to be paroled into the U.S. Initially, the app was designed for scheduling port inspections but was later expanded to let migrants book appointments.

What People Are Saying

“Effective January 20, 2025 at 12:00PM Eastern Time, the functionalities of CBP One™ that previously allowed undocumented aliens to submit advance information and schedule appointments at eight southwest border ports of entry is no longer available. All appointments have been canceled,” Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement.

Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk said in a post on X, formerly Twitter: Within minutes of being sworn in, President Trump has already ended the treasonous CBP One app that helped approximately 1 million foreign nationals enter America.

Journalist Arelis R. Hernández said in a post on X: “Migrants in Ciudad Juárez who were waiting for their 1 pm CBP1 parole appointments learned 20 minutes ago that the app has shut down & those appointments are no longer valid.”

What Happens Next

Trump will sign executive orders that will include deploying U.S. troops to the southern border, ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants, dismantling programs initiated under President Joe Biden, and taking steps to target transnational criminal gangs, incoming White House officials told Newsweek.

The incoming administration is expected to carry out raids in major cities such as Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Denver, and Miami.
